President’s term issue SC entertains written submissions

The Supreme Court (SC) yesterday (12) considered written submissions related to the issue whether President Maithripala Sirisena could be allowed to serve a six-year term as per the Constitution after having sought oral submissions on the same on 11 January.The SC proceedings took place before a five-Judge bench comprising Chief Justice Priyasath Dep, Justices Eva Wanasundera, Buwaneka Aluvihare, K.T. Chithrasiri, and Sisira de Abrew.

During the oral submissions, the Attorney General and two other attorneys spoke in favour of allowing the President to serve a six-year term as stipulated by the Constitution, while six attorneys spoke in opposition saying that he should only be allowed to serve five years as per the terms of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.The President has sought the opinion of the SC and asked that its decision should be conveyed to him by 14 Sunday January.
