DIG I.T. Canagaratnam passes away

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing away of DIG I.T. Canagaratnam (Retired), who was the President of Sri Lanka Basketball Federation from 1994 to 1998 and 2001 to 2004 and as well as a member of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka from 1994 to 2013.

His mortal remains lie at his residence, No. 136, Kotahena Street, Colombo 13 (Opposite the Kotahena Police Station).

Cortege leaves the residence on 14 Sunday January at 3.00 p.m. after Mass at the Church to General Cemetery, Borella.

Canagaratnam had the esteem distinction of being elected to high office in several international Basketball bodies. He was elected as a senior Vice President of the South Asian Basketball Association (SABA) in 1994. He was also elected to the Central Board of the then Asian Basketball Confederation the same year and held that office till 2011. In 2000, the ABC awarded Canagaratnam a recognition award for his contribution for the development of basketball. This ceremony was held at the Hilton Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Canagaratnam is a product of St. Michael's College, Batticaloa a school famous for basketball.
