Leader of the Opposition and the Tamil National Alliance, R. Sampanthan expressed hope that the proposed new Constitution would be framed sans any further delay this year.

In a statement greeting and wishing all Tamils a peaceful and prosperous Thai Pongal which falls tomorrow (14), he pointed out that of the many expectations in the hearts of the people for the new year, of particular importance is the Tamil people's long-standing aspiration for a lasting political solution to the national question, which hitherto remains unattained.

He acknowledged that during 2017, meaningful steps had been taken to frame a new Constitution in order to address this unresolved issue and as a result of such steps, the Interim Report of the Steering Committee of the Constitutional Assembly, which contains matters of importance that merit consideration had been submitted.

"My prayer is that, a new Constitution will be framed without any further delay in the new year. One which will uphold the right to dignity, self respect, and justice on the basis of equality amongst all citizens so as to ensure goodwill, unity and genuine reconciliation within an undivided and indivisible Sri Lanka."
