Dr. Hasmiya Uthumalebbe, emphasizing the need for the active participation of Muslim women in politics, pointed out that the All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) was the right forum for Muslim women to enter politics.

Dr. Uthumalebbe, President of the women's Wing of the All Ceylon Makkal Congress was speaking at a meeting in Negombo in the Gampaha District where a large number of women from various parts of the District were present.

The meeting was chaired by Branch President Fathima Ihsana who is contesting from Negombo in the upcoming local polls.

Dr.Hasmiya further said that it was regrettable that Muslim women in our society did not participate in social activities and rarely contested in the Local Government Elections or Parliamentary Elections due to social barriers. "When you refer to Islamic history, one could understand that Muslim women have played major roles in socio- economic activities within Islamic principles. They had extended a helping hand to Prophet Mohamed even during battles. So women should take leadership roles and serve the community. She also said that only a woman could understand a woman's problems, their feelings and expectations. There was a desperate need for women to enter politics and ACMC has set up a platform to implement this," she said. Fathima Sihara was elected president of ACMC's Negombo Women's Branch. Sihara assured that she would extend her fullest support for the party's future endeavours.
