58th Senior Nationals Hockey tournament Defence Services clinch titles

Defence Services men's and women's teams scored remarkable victories at the 58th National Hockey tournament concluded at Colombo Astro Turf yesterday.

The men's team beat State Services Hockey Association by 5 goals to nil and retained the A.A. Weerasinghe Challenge Trophy and the women's team beat Colombo by 6 goals to nil in the finals.

At the short whistle Defence Services led three goals to nil. Left extreme L. Weerasuriya opened the scoring in the 2nd minute to put Defence Services one up. Seven minutes later they went further ahead when right extreme A. Suresh sounded the board.

One minute later, centre forward K. Jayasundara got into the act to make it 3-0. In the 62nd minute Defence Services stretched their lead by another goal when A. Suresh fired his second goal (4-0) and seven minutes later L. Weerasuriya made it 5-0.

R.D. Kulathunga (Army) and Geethika Damayanthi (Navy) were adjudged the best players of the tournament.

This year's competition saw more than 10 teams competing for the championship from different districts.
