Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Senior Member cum Minister, Susil Premajayantha, commenting on a recent statement made by President Maithripala Sirisena about assuming control of the country's economy, following the prevailing tense situation between the ruling party and its coalition partner, said the President would have expressed such intentions in light of the progress or the lack of it of the programmes initiated by the National Economic Council appointed by the President.

The Economic Council, formed by the President three months ago, comprises the Prime Minister, the Minister of Finance, the President's Secretary, the Secretary to the Prime Minister and an economist as the Council's Secretary. The purpose of this Council is to find solutions for lacunas in the current economic policy and to discuss the speedy and efficacious implementation of economic policies.
