Disappearance of 11 children Ninth suspect remanded

Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne yesterday (23) remanded, till tomorrow (25), the ninth suspect in the case where 11 children were alleged to have been abducted and made to disappear. The suspect was identified as Aruna Mendis.

The suspect was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) produced in Court.

The CID informed the Court that the suspect was a former Master Chief Petty Officer of the Sri Lanka Navy.

They added that the suspect had served under Sumith Ranasinghe and as mentioned by one of the chief witnesses,. Lieutenant Commander Welagedera, had witnessed the suspect Mendis along with another suspect, who was recently remanded, K. Gamini, loading corpses wrapped in black polythene into a cab.

Seven suspects, in the case, who were previously remanded, are currently on bail including former Navy Media Spokesman D.K.P. Dassanayake. Attorney-at-Law Asith Siriwardene appeared for the suspect Mendis.
