Kandy Sports Club beat Havelock Sports Club by 30 points to 28 points to emerge league champions, in the inter-club League tournament played at Nittawela yesterday.

Kandy scored four tries, two conversions and two penalties and Havelocks scored four tries and four conversions.

Kandy Sports Club started off well and scored a great try in the 5th minute through their captain Gayan Weeraratne who played as centre. Nigel Ratwatte missed the conversion.

In the 25th minute Kandy Sports Club legend Fazil Marija jumped over the line and scored a super try. The conversion was done by Nigel Ratwatte the full back and Kandy led 12-0. Kandy then extended their lead when they won a penalty in the 29th minute and Ratwatte once again kicked it so well to increase the lead to 15-0.

Fazil Marija again scored a superb try in the 39th minute. He followed a kick ahead and on catching the ball again went over for a great try. Nigel Ratwatte made the conversion easily to take a comfortable lead 22-0 at half time. Kandy played some brilliant rugby in the second half and it was started in great style as Nigel Ratwatte kicked right a penalty to take the lead to 25-0. In the 47th minute Havelocks produced a fascinating try as their scrum half Sudam Sooriyarachchi ran past the Kandy backs to score a superb try and the conversion was done by full back Reeza Mubarak, 25-7.

Then Hooker Liston Flatney scored a powerful try from a scrum as they pushed Kandy behind and went over for a great try. That too was well converted by Mubarak to reduce the deficit, 25-14.

In the 70th minute, Havelocks scored their third try through another scrum and this time the job was done by number 8 Lasindu Karunatilake who jumped over the line. Reeza did the conversion and the score was further reduced to 21-25.

But Kandy came back strongly as Marija scored another superb try and that was his third. It was another good running try. But conversion was missed by Ratwatte but Kandy led 30-21.

Havelocks scored a try in the last minute through Lasindu Karunatilake again off a forwards push over and the try was converted by Mubarak.
