Young sprinter Vinoj Suranjaya de Silva and 20-year-old quarter-miler Tharusha Dhananjaya excelled during the day as they won their respective events, 100m and 400m, at the 'Road to Asian Games 2018' test event continued in Jakarta yesterday.

De Silva, fastest Sri Lankan this year, clocked a personal best of 10.28 seconds in the heats to advance to the finals and clocked 10.30 seconds in the final running against a wind of -0.4m/s. De Silva beat Muhammad Zohri of Indonesia and Dasan Vadivelu of India to win the event.

Earlier, Dhananjaya clocked his personal best (46.83 seconds) as he won the 400m ahead of National champion Dilip Ruwan. Competing from lane 3, Dhananjaya beat Jithu Baby (46.88 sec) of India, while National Champion Dilip Ruwan who was competing from lane 8 finished third in 46.97 seconds. Kalinga Kumarage finished fifth in 47.67 secs.

In the Javelin throw, new champion Sampath Ranasinghe was beaten by Indian Davinder Singh. Both were 80 plus throwers, but neither of them could throw their best last night, where Singh won the event with a throw of 75.87m while Sampath finished second with 75.39m. Sampath was leading the competition till the last round where Singh threw the winning distance with his sixth and final attempt.

Quarter miler Upamalika Rathnakumari could not impress as she finished third in the 400m with a time of 54.89 seconds behind two Indian athletes, Sonia Baishya (53.53 sec) and Sharee Ananda (54.34 sec). Upamalika clocked almost a similar time indoors when she won the Bronze medal at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championship earlier this month, which shows that she is capable of running faster outdoors. Yet she could not perform as expected in Jakarta. (AK)
