While eight Local Government bodies in the predominantly Sinhala areas were captured by Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna, and two in the Muslim areas by the National Congress, in the Ampara District, by registering a comfortable victory, the other 10 local bodies find it difficult to form stable administrations as their victories are with close and narrow margins.

Ten local bodies in the Tamil and Muslim areas in Ampara are in a state of confusion as no party has won a clear majority at the recent Local Government polls.

Party leaders have commenced discussions with other parties in order to seek support to form local governments. When the election results were released, none of the parties in the Muslim and Tamil areas were in a position to celebrate their victory.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna registered a comfortable victory in the Ampara Urban Council and Pradeshiya Sabhas of Padiyathalawa, Namal Oya, Maha Oya, Dehiattakandiya , Uhana, Damana and Lahugala while former Minister A. L. M. Athaullah's National Congress secured an overwhelming victory in Akkaraipattu Municipal Council and in Akkaraipattu Pradeshiya Sabas.

Meanwhile, SLMC Leader, Minister Rauf Hakeem has extended his unconditional support to the Independent Group which emerged victorious in Sainthamaruthu and had offered the mayoralty of Kalmunai to them. However, a spokesperson for the group, A.R.A. Azeem rejected Hakeem's offer stating that their sole intention was obtaining a separate Council for Sainthamaruthu.
