The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka, writing to Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Chairman Prof. G.L. Pieris, said that SLPP supporters were suspected of causing violence in a few Muslim villages in the Bulathsinhala and Katugastota areas and to immediately take action against these incidents.

President of the Muslim Council, N.M. Ameen, added that they had later directly contacted former Minister Basil Rajapaksa in this regard on 12 February and he had immediately looked into the matter.

He added that the Council had made a common request to the Party to make a public statement acknowledging the support given by the Muslim community during the Local Government Elections and pointed out that Muslim candidates had also represented the SLPP at the recent Polls.

Meanwhile, speaking to Ceylon Today, General Secretary of the SLPP Sagara Kariyawasam dismissed the Muslim Council claims saying that such incidents were not reported so far.

He added that this was a conspiracy carried out to discourage their supporters from the Muslim community during future elections as they had won the majority of the votes of the Muslim population during the recent Local Government Elections.
