India will explore foreign markets like Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh for its surplus power generation capacity, Indian Power Minister R.K. Singh announced yesterday in India.
"We need to explore foreign markets like Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh. Demand is there. We need to access that. They are short of power," the Press Trust of India (PTI) quoted him as saying at a press conference. The average plant load factor or capacity utilization in India is around 60%.

Singh also asked NTPC, India's largest power utility, to explore the possibility of investments in other countries to widen their horizon in view of surplus installed capacity in the country. In November 2017, former Secretary to the Indian Ministry of Finance Dr. S. Narayan said that Sri Lanka had the option of......importing electricity from India to address power shortages in the island. He said excess of power in some parts of India was such that the State government heads had announced free electricity for farmers, since they had no way to utilize the energy which would otherwise go to waste.
