Activists against the Uma Oya Project claimed that the people of Bandarawela showed their ungratefulness to them at the Local Government Election.

The Convenor of the People's Movement Against the Uma Oya Project, Samantha Vidyaratna said, the results of the Bandarawela Pradeshiya Sabha and the Bandarawela Urban Council were shocking to them.

"As a movement against the Uma Oya Project, we presented two groups under the symbol of the 'tap' to contest for the Polls. However, they were only able to get three members elected. Bandarawela was the most affected area due to the Uma Oya Project.

However, people became so blind, enough to give the majority to the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) in these two areas. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his people were the creators of this destruction, but now the people elected them even when the condition is so terrible," he explained.

"However as a movement we were able to get so many victories. As a result of our protests, the direction of the tunnel was changed and also the machines which are being used in mining were changed and it paved the way to minimize the harmful effects of this disastrous project," he added.
