The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) said that while they would not join the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the latter could join them if they wished.

SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said, former President and incumbent Parliamentarian Mahinda Rajapaksa is not willing to be a Prime Minister in the current Government under any circumstances, adding that Rajapaksa had clearly requested that Parliament be dissolved and a General Election be held.

However, he rejected media reports which stated that the SLPP would not accept any SLFP member who wants to cross over to the SLPP.
"They have different policies and we have different policies. So, a coalition of the two parties is highly unlikely in the near future. On issues like privatization, the current SLFP has different views to us."

When queried as to how the SLPP would establish power in Local Government bodies in which they did not have the majority, he added that they would consider each and every Local Government authority separately and will solve the issues according to the particular contexts.
